Overall, this festival turned out to be a great success. It was the Inaugural HullabaLOU, there were many things for Churchill Downs to learn the hard way this year, but they pulled it off without a hitch. Bands stayed on schedule, grounds were kept very tidy, only few were struck with heat exhaustion.
The Main Stage HullabaLOU crowd this year was not really the festival going group. With the one exception of Dave Matthews Band fans (of course they’re the festival going crowd). The infield crowds had the festival mindset and were ready to explore those feelings. Girl’s danced, drunks stumbled, and people lit up the wacky tobacky. I even saw one hula hoop. Being a south Louisville festival there were lots of shirtless men, cowboy hats and Budweiser in koozies. But this was all in good fun and everyone had a great time.
I’ve heard very few complaints, mostly from the non festival patrons who were not accustomed to the atmosphere. There are common courtesy’s that come along with the festival crowds and it’s our duty to respect any uphold those courtesy’s. “Yes, I will help you up after you drunkenly stumbled down that flight of steps.” “It’s really ok, you didn’t mean to dump your entire beer down my back, and hey with as hot as it is out here it’s actually welcome.” “Sure, big tall sweaty dude, you can stand right next to me, you’re just working as my new sun shade” It’s a festival, things happen. Good & bad. So why not take it all with a smile and go on about your way, enjoy the music and don’t be a downer.
HullabaLOU, it was fun and I look forward to next year.
